Plan For Your Writing Success!

If you have chosen to be a writer as your career it is important to know that without a plan you more than likely will not be a very successful writer.

Making your plan should include a few things:

• Set a weekly schedule for writing time
• Set short and long term goals for where you see your writing career going
• Make sure that everything you work on during your work week will help you meet all of your short and long term goals
• Write down those goals so that you always have them in your mind
• Take the actions necessary to achieve the goals you have set for yourself and your business
• Be flexible because sometimes will get in the way of your writing; be able to adjust your schedule to help when that happens

If you try to follow these few things every single week, month and year you will see a difference in the money you will make in your freelance writing career.

Think Like A Writer!

If you want to be a writer, you have to think like a writer.  What do I mean by that?  I mean that you have to believe in your mind that you are a writer (not just that you want to be one, but that you are one already).

Maybe you have a 9 – 5 job during the day, but you get up early in the mornings to write or stay up after everyone else has gone to bed and write.  Or you write during your lunch hour and any other time when you can spare a few minutes.  No matter when you do it, you are writing, therefore, you are a writer.

Your mindset has a lot to do with your success so if you tell yourself you are a writer then you will begin to believe that you are just that; a writer.  It sounds good, doesn’t it?  Say it over and over until you know it to be true; in your mind and your heart.  I am a writer.  I am a writer.  I am a writer.

There, don’t you feel like a writer now?  I knew you could do it!

Always Be Thankful!

Sometimes with all the things going on in our lives we forget to be thankful for all of the things that we do have.  Start or end each day writing down all of the things that you have to be thankful for.

Being thankful will allow you to focus on all of the positives in your life and will help to keep out the negative feelings or thoughts that might try to intrude on your day.  It doesn’t matter what it is that you are thankful for, just remember that being thankful is a huge part of your success.

If you are having a bad day, take a look at your thankful list and it will make your day much brighter and easier to deal with.  Sometimes we get so bogged down with everything we have to do and with all of the deadlines that we have to meet as writers, it’s difficult to remember to be thankful.

But, if you have that list everyday then you will always remember that being thankful is one of the most important parts of your day!

Enjoy the day!

Start Keeping a Journal!

As writers, we write.  However, sometimes we don’t use a journal to write in because we are always working on something else that has a deadline or something that we want to see published.

Slow down each day and write something in your journal.  Are you having trouble figuring out a story line?  Write it down and it might work itself out right there in your journal.  Or is what’s on your mind more of a personal thing?  If so, write that down too.

It’s easy to get caught up in everyday life and not writing down our feelings, goals or dreams.  They sometimes get moved to the side because we feel like they are in our head and might not need to be written down.

If you don’t write them down right now, put journaling time in your schedule so that you can keep your feelings, thoughts and goals right out there where you can always refer back to them if you need to.  You can always look back at everything you’ve learned over time.

Beginning today, try journaling and see if it helps to clear your mind and get more creative juices flowing!

Be A Serious Writer!

If you don’t take your writing seriously no one else will either.  You have to schedule writing into your day, every single day.  If you don’t, you won’t develop the skills you need to be successful.

Setting up a schedule that you stick to should be a top priority for you.  It can sometimes be hard to do because some people feel that if you work from home you don’t have anything to do and they can interrupt you whenever they want to.

Make the people in your life understand that writing is your job and just like any other job you have hours that you have to keep in order to meet your deadlines, to market yourself and to just write.

If you don’t make it clear that you are serious about your writing, those who feel free to interrupt your writing won’t realize that you are serious.  Learn to say no when people ask you to do something in the middle of the day when you know you should be writing.

Being a serious writer enables you to get all of the projects done that you need to during your allotted time so that you can enjoy time with your family and friends doing all of the fun stuff that you want to do!

Create Your Own Products!

As a freelance writer you can make money working on projects for others by blogging for them, writing e-books as a ghostwriter, writing articles, etc., but rather than do everything for other people why not create your own product.

It’s not as hard as it sounds.  Pick a niche that you know a lot about or would like to learn about that you don’t mind doing research on.  Write a report or e-book of your own for people to buy.  There are so many niches out there to choose from and I’m sure you can find something that you enjoy or are passionate about that will sell.

Take a look at news stories, read through magazines, watch talk shows and see what’s hot right now.  The advantage of this is when you write an e-book for someone else, you get paid one time to write that e-book and you never see any proceeds from the sale of that e-book.  If you create your own e-book then you only have to do the work once and YOU will be the one who sees the money from the sales.

Doesn’t that sound like a much better deal?  It does to me!  It doesn’t even have to be an e-book.  It can be an e-course that you create, or a how-to video.  There are many options available to you.  Look around online and see what peaks your interest.  You’ll be glad you did!

Are Online Job Boards for You?

That all depends on you as an individual.  It is easy to get signed up to any job board and to begin working even if you don’t have a reputation built up, but are they really worth the trouble of logging on each and every day to see if there is something worth your while.

I’ve cautioned before not to get stuck in the “sweat shop” online boards and trust me, they do exist and it is so easy to get stuck in there.  But, there are also job opportunities out there that real people are willing to pay for.  I’ve paid for services myself on sites such as Upwork, vWorker, and ODesk.  And I don’t pay peanuts to those who show me that they can do great work, I pay them what they are worth.

It’s free on most of them to sign up as a writer so if you aren’t sure if they are for you or not, sign up and take a look around.  See if there is something that floats your boat and if so, apply for it.  Give the price that you feel you deserve for the project and don’t shortchange yourself.

If you are asked to do an article that you know nothing about and will have to research, make sure to figure that amount into your bid.  If you don’t, you won’t end up making much money at all (and it will turn into an endless cycle of doing articles for absolutely nothing).

I’ve also done work on each of these job boards and have made good money on the projects I’ve worked on.  When I first started I did things for a little cheaper than I normally would have just so I could get my rankings up there and I felt ok doing that because I could always cut that client loose when I found someone who would pay me what I was worth.

So, to answer that question honestly, it will depend on you and your needs.  There are other job boards that are available to you (I only named a few of them), and once you find the good ones you will begin to make more and more money.

If you do try it, let me know what your thoughts are on them and what kind of success you’ve had with them.  As a fellow writer, I want everyone to get a cut of the money that is out there to be made!

Be Persistent

If you want to live the life you are actually dreaming about, the best advice I can give you is to be persistent.  You have to continue to fight for what you want in the freelance world and being persistent will help you get to where you want to be.

When you send off a submission to an editor and you get that dreaded rejection letter, just put the submission in another envelope and send it to a different editor.  Keep doing this until you get that “yes” answer that you have been looking for!

If you give up after one or two rejection letters then you will never make it to where you want to be.  Just keep on plugging your work and keep on sending all of those submissions out and eventually one of those rejections will turn right into an acceptance!

You can do it as long as you are persistent!
